"...been wadin' through the high muddy water"
The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar
Elkie Brooks is a superb journeyman singer who can sing blues, country or rock - she even pulled off a credible raspy-voiced version of "Stairway to Heaven" - but she sesms to especially love the blues. Brooks was very popular in England during the 70's, and sang with Vinegar Joe. On her 2005 album Electric Lady, she does a great version of Paul Rogers' Muddy Water Blues, a song near and dear to our heart here. there's also a revelatory take on Dylan's "The Groom's Still Waitng at the Altar." she makes the song funky and soulful, with its tasty horn section punctuation, and wraps herslf around the complex lyrics like the accomplished storyteller singer she is. She takes the dense, apocalyptic tune and makes it all her own.
